Printers / Copiers
Overview
Next-generation Multi-function Printers (MFPs) require a significant amount of distributed processing to not only implement the high-quality print and scan functions, but to also control network connectivity and the graphical user interface integrated within the device.
Typically MFPs integrate:
- High-end rasterization processor for fast Postscript and image manipulation
- Secure network processing to WiFi or other high-speed networks
- Low end graphics and touch screen controller
- Printer head servo control
- Storage
MIPS® Solutions
MIPS Technologies is the recognized market leader of high-performance, application-specific solutions for printer SoC designs.
The MIPS32® 34K® multi-threaded processor core, with inherent cache coherency support, provides the highly efficient virtual processing capabilities necessary to support the increasing number of functions required for today's printers. Additional QoS and support of multiple operating systems enable the system designer to best use the available resources and allocate software tasks to achieve the required performance.
The multi-threaded architecture of the 34K® core enables the CPU to switch to other applications while waiting (typical in printers), thereby boosting system performance by increasing control/data throughput. The 34K core is also scalable in performance by increasing additional virtual processing elements-which help to reduce overall cost by implementing functions that would normally be handled by external processors.
